Isaiah 58:1-12

Fasting is more than absence of something,

denying the self, or avoidance.

It’s not about giving up one thing,

or suffering as a mild annoyance.

When we try to seek our God’s favor

by heaping the ash on top of our head

we act as if this is something major,

even though we ignore what God has said.

It’s easier to wrinkle our faces,

but with other’s we can’t be bothered.

We want to be seen in public spaces,

and so when they see us, we feel honored.

But, then when we ask, “God are you there?”

the answer returns asking how much we cared.
