Luke 6.27-38


These things you ask are not easy to do.

Ignoring our nature, impulses, too,

listening for your Words that are true, 

forgetting our norms and following you.

When hating our enemies makes more sense 

than remembering that they, too, are Yours.

Tearing down a wall, destroying a fence

feels like nothing more than pointless chores.

Or, giving a thief more than they deserve,

my entire wallet or extra cloak.

I really don’t know if I have the nerve

to act like this is real, not some big joke.

Yet, you give me your overflowing grace

and expect I do the same in this place.
