The sky – straight above me
and moving toward the horizon –
fades from deep royal
to
almost gray,
no doubt mixed with flecks of
the same red dirt
that my skin is freckled with,
or that can still be found
somewhere under my fingernails
from a childhood spent digging in it.
After all of these years
I realize how easily
I took this sky
and this land
for granted.
